0What Is the Singularity?
The technological singularity is the idea that technology, driven by AI that can improve itself, will one day advance so fast that the world on the other side becomes hard to predict.
- 1958
John von Neumann, as recalled by Stanislaw Ulam, describes technology accelerating toward “some essential singularity” beyond which human affairs “could not continue.”
- 1965
I. J. Good describes an “intelligence explosion”: a machine smart enough to design machines smarter than itself.
- 1993
Vernor Vinge’s essay “The Coming Technological Singularity” makes the name stick, and predicts superhuman intelligence within thirty years.
- 2005–2024
Ray Kurzweil puts dates on it: human-level AI by 2029, the singularity by 2045. His 2024 book, The Singularity Is Nearer, keeps both dates.
Whether it arrives as a single moment or as a long climb, its effects are already here: AI is taking on work that only people could do, and the pace keeps increasing. That is why the rest of this thesis is about preparing now.

IIIThe New Shape of Work
For a century, companies were built as pyramids: a few people deciding at the top, layers in the middle passing information up and down, and most of the work at the bottom. Those layers existed to move information and coordinate people. AI and agents are taking over much of that, and the structures are collapsing.
The top comes closer to the work.
Leaders have to come down to the work curve: closer to the actual work, the data and the customer, because the layers that used to translate it for them are thinning out.
The bottom rises fast.
The people closest to the work are rising fast. They are the first to identify what needs to change, and AI gives them the reach to change it.
Flatter, and closer to the capital curve.
The result is a flatter company whose structure sits much closer to its capital curve: what it produces grows with its capital and its systems, not with layers of headcount.
